What is Platform?

Platform is a series of new plays for young actors commissioned by Tonic Theatre and published by Nick Hern Books. Responding to the current lack of roles for girls in writing for young actors, all the plays in the Platform series have mainly or entirely female casts, and put young women and their stories at the heart of the action.

The first three plays in the series are: This Changes Everything by Joel Horwood, Second Person Narrative by Jemma Kennedy, and The Light Burns Blue by Silva Semerciyan. The second series added two new plays: The Glove Thief by Beth Flintoff and Red by Somalia Seaton and in July 2020 Bright. Young. Things by Georgia Christou and Heavy Weather by Lizzie Nunnery were published.

We hope that schools, youth theatres, and young companies across the UK will stage their own productions of the plays. All of Tonic’s proceeds from sales of the plays and amateur performance licences will be invested directly into commissioning further titles in the series.

The Platform plays are available to purchase from Tonic’s online store at half price (£4.50) plus P&P.
